Behind the Shot: Wildlife Photography & Stories
Behind the Shot
Wildlife Photography & Stories
For one evening, the Audimax becomes a window into the wild.
The photos you may have already walked past
Some of the animal and nature photos around Building 4 near the Synapse Room were taken by Mr. Ralf Darius.
On this evening, we get to hear what is usually missing when we only see the final image: where the photo was taken, what happened before it, what went wrong, and how much patience it took to get the shot.

The event is mainly about the stories behind the photos. For anyone interested in photography, there will also be room for the technical side: light, distance, timing, preparation, camera choices, and working in real field conditions.
What is Behind the Shot?
Behind the Shot is an evening with Mr. Ralf Darius about wildlife photography, nature, travel, and the work behind images that most of us would usually only see in documentaries.
It is not a formal photography course, and you do not need a camera or previous experience. The focus is on the stories: animal encounters, unexpected situations, waiting, timing, and the small decisions that make a photo possible.
For those who are curious about photography, the evening can also go into the practical side: what lens or camera setup makes sense, how close you can realistically get, how light changes the image, and how wildlife photography works when the subject does not wait for you.
You come in, sit down, and see the wild through the eyes of someone who was actually there.
Being there at the right moment
Wildlife photography often looks simple after the image is finished. In reality, the difficult part is usually everything before the photo: finding the place, waiting long enough, staying alert, and reacting when the moment appears.

This evening is about those moments before and around the photo — not only the final result.
The details most people would miss
Some wildlife images are about large animals and dramatic scenes. Others are about small details: movement, color, shape, and the ability to notice something before it disappears.

For students interested in photography, this is also where questions of focus, distance, light, and patience become concrete.
How a shot actually happens
A photo like this may look like one perfect moment. Behind it, there can be heat, movement, difficult light, field conditions, and many attempts that did not work.

That is why the evening is called Behind the Shot: the story is often bigger than the image itself.
Animals, behavior, and expression
Wildlife photography is also about behavior. Sometimes an image stays with you because of a look, a posture, or a moment that feels strangely familiar.

This is why the event is not only for photographers. It is also for anyone interested in animals, nature documentaries, biology, travel, and stories from the field.
Why the Audimax?
These photos need a proper screen. On a phone, it is easy to miss the details: color, texture, light, distance, and the small parts of the image that make it work.

We will meet first in the Synapse Room and then go together to the Audimax.
Small subjects, serious patience
Not every wildlife story starts with a large animal. Some of the most interesting images come from smaller subjects and from noticing scenes that most people would walk past.

This part of wildlife photography is less about spectacle and more about attention.
