As the Lounge spirit grew, so did the real-life communities forming around it. These aren't just ideas — they’re living, breathing student-run circles:
- Swimming Ka-Li – Weekly sessions every Thursday from 17:00 to 18:30 🏊 (official university course)
- Book Club – A cozy, consistent circle started by Zeiad Emara 📚
- Chessmate – The chess club of HSRW Ka-Li: find worthy opponents, show your best checkmates ♟ (started by us)
- Ka-Li Runners and Hikers – Movement, nature, and shared trails 🏃♂️🌿 (started by us)
- Jet Lag Junkies – Students who love to travel and share advice and stories from around the world ✈️🧳 (started by us)
Study & Chill Lounge – Our Journey
I am Amr, a fellow student studying E&E. I'm a student assistant in microbiology — and it all started with an idea to bring our student life back into focus 🥹. We realized lectures alone weren’t it. There’s more we can be, more we can share, and so we kicked it off: the Study & Chill Lounge.
This began in coordination with the Synapse Program from HSRW and with support from professors like Prof. Hansen (MiBi professor ✨), who genuinely cared about restoring real student culture right here in Kamp-Lintfort.
Since summer semester 2024, the collaborative and social learning centre "Synapse" has been located in Building 4, 1st Floor, Room 04 01 310. It serves as a hub for general organisational knowledge needed for a successful degree, as well as offering assistance with more specific questions. Here, students can receive academic support outside the context of particular courses, and have the opportunity to collaborate between lectures. Alongside a table football (kicker) game, a collection of games and books is being built, and office hours and a wide range of events on a variety of topics is being offered – from library services and IT support to study guidance. Please, check out the Moodle page for current and upcoming offers.
So we proposed this weekly meeting — initially Wednesdays 14:00–18:00, later moved to Tuesdays 16:00–20:00 to better fit everyone’s schedules — held in the study room above the Mensa (KAM 04 01 310).
The idea was never to just “study” — it was to meet, share energy, shape our space, and live as students beyond the lecture hall. No pressure, no formality — if you want to sit quietly and study, you do that. If you want to brainstorm a startup idea or play chess or just vent, that’s also Lounge material.
Our Lounge Activities (they actually happened!)
- Brainstorm Bazaar
Where we take ideas (problems or not), implement them and work on building them or fixing them. - Think Tank Wednesdays
Those who have ideas and are looking for partners with the same passion or people to support them and share their journey towards success. - Mind Meld Wednesdays
Where we choose a topic and have a discussion about it, raise awareness about it or even have the possible environment to debate it if two people want to do that. - Scholar Social Hour
People who want to work in research and are looking to explore more, where we can build international teams and create contacts and share knowledge and build stuff in the fablab and go to conferences together or make our own conference environment. - The Study Hive
We choose a rather harder topic and each person studies and researches a part of it and we meet to share our findings until all of us have been experts about that topic of study. - Campus Connect
We plan a social meeting, a playlist to listen to, a movie to watch together (yes we have that option — ask me), something to cook or drink or an outing somewhere before or after the planned weekly meeting. - Nurture Nook
Where one can take a break from learning to share or complain in a safe environment and/or ask for help with psychologically aware and developed people… - Brain Boost Bonanza
Where students can choose specific topics to give us presentations or share with us NatGeo style. - Study Circle & Beyond
Where students have study groups and also teach each other (which by the way helps you greatly) while ensuring a chill environment with the same friends in that group. Many of us — including myself — have a fair background in many subjects, so you’d always have a good supervised circle to ask questions.
