Perseid Meteor Shower & Moon Watching β Bike Trip to Halde Norddeutschland
Every August, the night sky turns into one of the most magical shows of the year β the Perseid Meteor Shower. This year, it peaks on the night of Tuesday, August 12, 2025, and weβre making it a Ka-Li adventure. π΄ββοΈπβ¨
Weβll meet right after the Study & Chill Lounge session, grab our bikes, and head to the Halde. Itβs a local landmark with an incredible open view of the sky, perfect for stargazing. Weβll be having a picninc and watching the meteors together, catching the moonrise, and yes β Iβm bringing my telescope so everyone gets a closer look at our cosmic neighbor.
Why This Night is Special
The Perseids are known for their bright, fast meteors β sometimes leaving glowing trails across the sky. This year, the Moon will be in a Waning Gibbous phase at about 87.8% illumination. That means itβll be bright, but weβll still have plenty of chances to catch meteors shooting by if we position ourselves well.
Weβll start with moon viewing through the telescope right after it rises. Then, as the night gets darker, weβll relax and enjoy the meteor shower at its peak.
Plan for the Evening
- 16:00 β 20:00: Lounge session at Study & Chill (Building 4, 1st Floor, Room 04 01 310).
- 20:15: Bike group departs from the university towards Halde Norddeutschland.
- ~20:45: Arrive at the Halde, set up blankets for the picnic and telescope.
- 21:02: Watch the Sunset.
- 21:15: Moonrise β telescope viewing & photography.
- After dark: Meteor shower watching, snacks, and stargazing until we head back together.
How to Join
You can either bike with the group from the university or meet us directly at Halde Norddeutschland. Bring something comfy to sit on, snacks, warm clothes (it gets chilly at night), and your curiosity. If you have binoculars or your own telescope, feel free to bring them!
Weβll have a shared experience like no other β watching the Moon, catching meteors, and riding back under the night sky. π²π
Pro Tips for Meteor Watching
- Let your eyes adjust to the dark for at least 15 minutes for the best view.
- Look away from the Moon to catch fainter meteors.
- Use a stargazing app to identify constellations while waiting for meteors.
- Bring a thermos with tea or coffee β it makes the night even better.
See you under the stars β this will be one for the books. ππ
