Moodle. Mensa. Semester ticket. Lectures. Exams. Most students learn these parts of university life very quickly.
But ask what FSR, StuPa and AStA actually do, and the campus map suddenly becomes foggy. These are not three names for the same thing. They sit at different levels, carry different responsibilities and affect student life in different ways.
The guide nobody gives you during orientation: who represents you, who decides, and who does the daily work?
The student self-governance map
Rhine-Waal University
The university as a whole: faculties, administration, Senate, Presidium and university services.
The Student Body
All enrolled students together form the student body and elect student representatives.
StuPa
The highest legislative body of the student body. It decides the major framework, adopts the student budget and elects the AStA board.
FSR
Faculty-level elected representatives. They are closest to your study programme, faculty staff and everyday academic student concerns.
AStA
The executive body of the student body. It handles day-to-day student matters through its board and departments.
The easiest way to remember it
FSR = your faculty level
Questions, ideas or problems connected to your faculty and study environment.
StuPa = the student parliament
The elected body that sets rules, major priorities and the financial framework.
AStA = the student executive
The body that manages many daily student matters, services, departments and projects.
Why should ordinary students care?
Because these structures are not separate from student life. They influence how student representation works, how budgets are adopted, how services and activities are organized, and where students can bring questions, motions or ideas.
You do not need to join a committee to understand the system. But knowing where a decision belongs can save weeks of confusion.
Where can you see official documents?
HSRW states that students can use the official StuPa Moodle course to find meeting dates, agendas and meeting minutes. The same space is also an important starting point for public student-body documents.

The Lounge note
Student life is not only what happens at events. It is also the invisible structure behind the room, the budget, the vote, the decision and the person you contact when something needs to change.
You do not have to become a student politician.
But you deserve to know how your student community works.
