What Is an FSR? Your Closest Student Representation at HSRW
Behind the Campus FSR 5 min read
If StuPa sounds far away and AStA sounds like another mysterious university abbreviation, the FSR is usually the easiest place to begin.
FSR stands for Fachschaftsrat, usually translated as Faculty Student Representatives or Faculty Student Council. It represents students within one specific faculty.
Think of the FSR as the student representation closest to your degree programme and faculty life.
What does an FSR actually do?
According to HSRW, each FSR is made up of elected students and handles student affairs within its faculty. It also acts as an interface between students, faculty staff and the wider public.
- Represents faculty students: brings concerns and perspectives into faculty-level discussions.
- Helps students navigate problems: especially when the issue is connected to faculty life, courses or communication.
- Connects students and staff: helps information move in both directions.
- Creates student life: many FSRs organize orientation activities, meetups, information formats or faculty traditions.
- Welcomes participation: the official page explicitly encourages new students to get involved.
Which FSR belongs to you?
Technology & Bionics

Life Sciences

Society & Economics
For students in the Faculty of Society and Economics.
Communication & Environment
For students in the Faculty of Communication and Environment at Kamp-Lintfort.
When should you contact your FSR?
A good rule: if your question is strongly connected to your faculty, study environment or the shared experience of students in your programme, the FSR is usually a sensible first contact.
That does not mean the FSR can solve every individual examination or administrative case. But it can often help you understand where the issue belongs, identify whether other students are affected and connect you with the right route.
FSR, StuPa or AStA?
- FSR: faculty-level student representation.
- StuPa: university-wide student parliament and legislative body.
- AStA: university-wide executive body handling many day-to-day student matters.
The Lounge note
The FSR is often where student representation feels most human: people from your own faculty, dealing with problems and ideas close to your daily reality.
Before assuming nobody represents your faculty, find out who your FSR is.
